So, I have noticed that with my new iPhone I NEVER log onto my regular desktop anymore, which means no blogging. I will have to find a way to motivate myself . . . or maybe just start blogging from my phone.

Anyways, here are some things I have been recently enjoying:

- Foursquare It is ridiculous how simple this is yet how much I feel compelled to check in everywhere now. I still think checking in from your house is a little much though so I haven’t gotten that crazy yet . . .

-Artist tell stories (mostly about themselves)-This was a great little show at SMOCA. Unfortunately it is over (I told you I was behind on blogging). I really liked the work by Andrew Kuo—the text is a little hard to read, but he makes these graphs of thoughts that are funny, sometimes sad, and really interesting.

-TV shows: Portlandia, New Girl, and the Sopranos. Wait, is this 1999 you ask? No, just Tom and I never watched the Sopranos and a friend lent me the DVDs

-DJ Kaskade-Sometimes when people talk about how much they hate techno and dubstep I wonder if I am crazy because I really like it?

-Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me-And Other Concerns by Mindy Kaling This book is full of funny moments here’s one of them: “There is no sunrise so beautiful that it is worth waking me up to see it.”

Four . . . four is the answer this year:

1. On Wednesday night my sister and I were party rockers (my brother is the Arab), check out my Redfoo glasses!

2. On Friday night I was a nurse and Tom was my zombie patient.

3. On Saturday night we were the cast of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (me as Indiana, Tom as Mola Ram, Matt as Short Round, and Sarah as Willie).

4. Monday at work my boss was the Cat in the Hat and we were the "Things."

I think I've gone a little overboard?

So the AZ Taco Fest was Saturday 10/15, it was delicious! I just wish it was a little cooler outside so we could have stayed all day :) I was impressed by the showing of veggie and seafood tacos as well.

I made my first ever batch of home-made peach jam yesterday!

Thank you to my mom for the peaches, Tom for the help, and Martha Stewart for the recipe!

Recipe:

8-10 peaches

3 cups of sugar

the juice from one lemon

a dash of salt

1. Peel and pit the peaches, in small batches put into a food processor and pulse until chunky.

2. Add all ingredients to a sauce pot and put on high or medium high. Stir continuously while boiling. There will be some "foam", that will subside and the fruit will rise to the top, keep boiling until it thickens.

3. Once you think it's ready (somewhere between 12 and 30 minutes) place a spoonful in the freezer for one minute, if it gels it's done.

4. Let cool and place in jars.

5. Either keep in the fridge for up to 3 weeks or you can learn how to can it (I haven't learned that part yet!)

Remember that Friends episode with the jam? I am like Joey and love to eat the jam out of the jar, dangerous!

A little Hindu knowledge for the day . . .The 3 Gunas

So I'll be honest, I don't know much about Hinduism, but I do enjoy Yoga class. The teacher at my gym adds a little bit of meditation and reflective though in often, and I liked what she taught about this past Saturday.

The 3 Gunas

All material nature is made up the interplay of three energies or "gunas". The gunas are a great map for navigating your way through life. When you can recognize which of these energies is at play in your life, it makes it so much easier to bring about a state of balance.

Tamas - the power of darkness, inertia, form and materiality.

Tamas is dull, insensible, gloomy and dark energy. The Sanskrit word literally means "darkness, dark-blue, black"People that are tamasic are gloomy, sluggish, dull and blinded by greed. Sometimes people who are tamasic can be characterized as lazy and slothful. If you spend the night drinking tequila in Margaritaville, the next morning you will find yourself deep in the heart of Tamasicville On the darker end of the tamasic scale, they can be unconscious of the needs others, dark and destructive. '

In Yoga this would be like "phoning in" your workout, you're hunched over in the pose but you're not mindful or working at it.

Rajas - the power of energy, action, change and movement.  

Generally: is a passionate, frenetic, creative, tumultuous energy. People that are rajasic are full of desire, thirsting for worldly enjoyment, and even at more extreme ends of the scale, fueled by competition and ambitiousness. The Sanskrit root means "impure". It is also related to the root rakta, "redness". And raga, "passion." If you think of living in a bright red room or a woman wearing a red dress, you can feel the energy of Rajas.

In Yoga this is more like "running in place," you're expending a lot of energy worrying about being better than the person next to you, thinking about work, etc. and not actually focusing on your practice.

Sattva - the power of harmony, balance, light and intelligence; higher spiritual potential. 

Sattva is a calm, peaceful and clear energy. The Sanskrit word is based on the principle "Sat" or "being, as it should be, perfect". People that are Sattvic are calm, centered, compassionate and unselfish.

In Yoga this of course is the ideal place to be, moving forward.

--Overall I found this very interesting because I think I spend most of my time after work switching back and forth from being Rajistic (overthinking everything) to Tamastic (turning off my brain and watching TV). Understanding that I could hopefully move toward Sattvic tendencies.

Pesto Pasta Primavera

Pesto Pasta Primavera

I found this recipe in Glamour magazine but made a few changes. Pasta Primavera is an American version of making an Italian Pasta with the fresh veggies of Spring. It's summer now, so I must be wishing for cooler weather?

Makes four servings

1 zucchini-sliced
1 large handful of sugar snap peas-sliced in half
8 oz. dried spaghetti
1 cup prepared pesto
1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp. minced garlic (you can substitute 2 cloves and chop yourself if you're ambitious!)
1 cup cherry tomatoes-sliced in half (I used half yellow, half red for color)
4 medium carrots-sliced into half then fours (and like my friend Kat says, don't use baby carrots, not as good!)
Parmesan cheese to top
Kosher salt and ground pepper to taste

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to boil. Drop the zucchini, snap peas, and carrots in; cook until tender, about 1 minute. Using a strainer or slotted spoon transfer the vegetables to a colander and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process.

2. Stir the pasta into the still-boiling water. Cook according to the package (probably 8-10 minutes).

3. While the pasta is cooking, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook, stirring until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the tomatoes and cook 1 minute. Add the rest of the veggies and a pinch of salt, cook until warmed through.

4. Drain the pasta and place back in pan or in a large bowl, add the pesto and toss until combined. Add the veggies and toss again.

5. Add Parmesan, salt, and pepper and serve.

If you're lucky your husband will make the garlic bread :)

Martha Stewart had the guys who wrote the book Jelly Mongers (British duo Sam Bompas and Harry Parr) on her show . . . and now I want to make some jellies! They had glow in the dark, alcoholic jelly molds. Only problem is they use leaf gelatin which doesn't "gel" well with my pescatarian lifestyle (I think it's made from cow's feet). Has anyone ever tried using Agar Agar vegetarian gelatin? I am curious to know if it would work.

Also of note, these same guys opened up a "Rabbit Cafe" for Easter where you could come in and pet rabbits and eat Easter candies and snacks. Love. Reggie my all black bunny would have looked great with all those white rabbits.

Spring Break Part Six: A dramatic ending to our Rome trip

Our last day in Rome was on the official 150th anniversary of the country . . . so almost every Roman had the day off to celebrate. Unfortunately, it meant a lot of shops and attractions were closed. Luckily, Vatican City does not count as Italy, so we went there for a while. We walked around St. Peter's Square and Basilica. The Basilica was full of an amazing amount of art, statues, and Popes' tombs. Afterwards we had some gelato (a good lunch if I do say so myself). We tried to go souvenir shopping, but weren't having much luck. Then, disaster. The cobblestone streets were very slippery and in all the rain I slipped and fell and sprained my ankle. I heard it pop and knew it would not be good, so a kind waiter let us sit in a cafe for a while until a taxi took us back to the hotel. We ate dinner at the hotel, had delicious gnocchi and watched some Italian TV (didn't understand a word but still fun). The next day we almost missed our flight, literally running through the airport on a sprained ankle made me feel like I was in a reality show or something. No thanks to the badly organized airport and United Airlines, we managed to make it home. We didn't get any souvenirs, but that's just an excuse to go back someday! The videos of our last day are better than the photos, but I will have to save my movie editing for another day.

Spring Break Part Five: Ancient Rome

Wednesday we decided even though it was a little rainy to buy an umbrella and walk down to tour the Colosseum and some of Ancient Rome. We joined a tour and the Roman guide was pretty fun, he showed pictures of what everything used to look like and listed all the inaccuracies in movies like Gladiator. The tour then walked over to Palatine Hill, but the rain was really starting then. We still strolled along the ruins. When we got hungry we left for lunch in a tented cafe and had more pizza, this time more brick-oven style. We went back to the hotel for a nap and to make dinner reservations. We got a little lost finding Ristorante Maccheroni but it was so worth the trouble! This was the best meal of the trip so far. We had bread, a mozzarella appetizer, then pasta and grilled vegetables. We tried our best but couldn't finish it all, it was sad to leave the delicious food behind. We hadn't realized it, but that night was La Notte Tricolore, the 150th anniversary of Italy as a country. The city was lit up, people with flags everywhere celebrating till 2am or later. We finally found Piazza Navona and spent some time enjoying the fountains. The day was great, I am just disappointed in the scans of my black and white photos, I will have to have them re-done soon!

Spring Break Part Four: Leaving London for Rome

Tuesday we got up and had to pack and say goodbye to the lovely city. I think I forgot to mention, our hotel was not only very nice, but had an art exhibit of bunnies and was right next to the Tate Britain to boot, very us. The show in the hotel was called "Rabbits and Snow Angels" by Ania Tomaszewska-Nelson. After breakfast and packing we had just about an hour to walk around the Tate. No photos were allowed, so tried to scribble down a few names of the best work I saw there. Mike Nelson's Coral Reef, Susan Hiller, and Cerith Wyn Nelson stood out. We took two trains to the airport and flew British Airways to Rome. If you think I was impressed with Air Canada, I was equally impressed with BA! They are more expensive though, so we only used them for the small flight. We lost an hour traveling so it was late when we got to Rome. Fortunately, they don't even start the evening till 8pm there so it was no problem. We checked in to the Hotel Napoleon, a big change from the modern hotel we had, it was old-fashioned but very nice. I had been worried about not learning any Italian before going, but quickly found that Buna Sera (good evening) and Grazie (thank you) were the only terms needed, everyone spoke English. Being in London had felt like a vacation, it is a big city but everyone is so nice I could live there, though it would be hard to not start impersonating the accent everywhere. But Rome! Rome felt like a movie. Cobblestone streets, fountains, old buildings. . . there is a treasure around every corner and full of a feeling. We took the Metro to the Spanish Steps and had pizza and crepes. Walked around a little and decided to try and find Piazza Navona. Instead we wandered right to La Fontana di Trevi. If there hadn't been the crowd there it would have felt like "La Dolce Vita" in that we turned a corner and here was this gorgeous fountain tucked in around apartments. We threw in a coin and did some people watching.

Spring Break Part Three: Busy Monday in London

So Tom and I had the best intentions of getting up early Monday but over slept just a little. I dashed downstairs to grab some breakfast (they looked at me like I was a little silly since they were closing, but I wasn't going to miss out on free croissants!) We started out the day walking to the river Thames and took a river cruise up to the Tower of London. There we were regaled by stories of death and torture by the Beefeater tourguides, saw the crown jewels, and armor of Henry VIII. I could have spent all day there, but we wanted to try and fit in as much as possible. We got to the British Museum only about a 1/2 hour before they closed, just enough time to see the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian art, and Korean ceramics. Since they were closing we had time to find Abbey Road where Tom tried his best to walk where the Beatles walked. Unfortunatley, it was dark and a very busy street so we couldn't get the full picture imitation. I was feeling a little tired and starving so we went to a little diner called Munchkins, I wasn't expecting much but they had the best veggie burger I think I've ever had! After all this running around I was glad we had tickets to sit down and see We Will Rock You. A musical written by the remaining members of Queen. The show was silly, the music was great. After about the 4th encore I was thinking "alright already" when Queen suddenly came on stage. It turns out the night before they had won an Olivier award and came to thank the audience. Pretty lucky night to be there!

Spring Break Part Two: Sunday in London

For our first full day in London we woke up and had a delish breakfast at our hotel (included), they had the regular continental spread, but also European cheeses, spiced Morroccan fruits and some other extras. Afterwards, we headed over to Camden Market to do some shopping. We ended up just browsing around, didn't buy anything. In typical Budzak fashion we always are waiting to find something better and rarely buy souvenirs. I would loved to have more spending money to browse all the vintage clothes racks we saw. After a while of wandering we stopped in at the End of the World pub for a rest. Then headed to Picadilly Circus to get on a double-decker bus tour. I had found a coupon online for the "Original Tour," it had a 24 hour hop-on hop-off tour which included a river cruise. It was nice to drive around for a while looking at the outside of Buckingham Palace and having someone point out all the sights. We jumped off around Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the Houses of Parliament. After a little while there we headed over to the London Eye. I was a little scared as ferris wheels always make me nervous. But this was much bigger than I had expected! Each pod fit maybe 20 people who could walk around. It moved very slowly around so no herky-jerky stops like on a traditional ferris wheel. The view was nice, I want to rent one for my birthday party someday if I'm ever rich and in London :). Afterwards we tried to hit the Tower of London, but it was too late so we decided to save it for the next day and went back to the hotel for a quick nap. The quick nap turned into a long nap on accident (stupid cell phone alarm) and we had room service for dinner . . . the jet lag had gotten us a little.

Spring Break Part One: 1st day in London

Since I want to write down everything that happened on my trip I think I'll post each day separately. We set out at noon on Friday 03/11 to fly Air Canada to London's Heathrow Airport. I highly recommend Air Canada! They were so nice, free food and only $50 to upgrade to the emergency row seats (extra leg room for Tom and I since we're so tall). When we finally checked in to the Mint Hotel it was probably like 5am Arizona time, we were beat. We slept a few hours and then headed out to the Tate Modern Art Museum (free and open until 10pm, London's museums totally beat the U.S.'s for that). We saw original Marcel Duchamp, Roy Lichtenstein, Man Ray, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, just to name a few. Then we walked along the river to The Anchor, a pub where we had some fish & chips with mushy peas. It was definitely all it's cracked up to be. We didn't last much longer that night, still a little jet-lagged we took the tube back to the hotel and watched some English stand-up comedy before going to sleep.

The Mint Hotel was super modern (think Ikea design) and super nice.

Taking the tube from the airport to our hotel, only 7 pounds for a day pass, pretty good deal! I look a little crazed, but its because I couldn't really sleep on the flight.

This Lichtenstein was even better in person.

At the Tate Modern, we REALLY liked this piece, but I can't remember the artist's name :(

Fifth Wedding Anniversary

Five years went by so fast . . . it must be because I have such a great husband. Our anniversary was January 7th, to celebrate we went to out to eat at St. Francis, we had never been there before (but I think I've driven past many a time). We had decided to pick somwhere new out of Phoenix Magazine's 85 best restaurants edition.

There was about an hour wait, but we didn't mind sitting outside on the nicely heated patio.

I ordered the Forbidden Rice, I was excited to have a vegetarian meal that included more vegetables than I can usually imagine, it was good.

The traditional gift for a five year anniversary is something made of wood, so Tom got a pretty large ship's steering wheel (for his soon to be finished pirate themed patio) and I got an orange tree. I'm excited to have oranges in the next few years from my backyard.

Here's to the next five years!

Seriously, I have no idea how November is almost over and I haven't posted any photos . . . .

I think between going to the Bouncing Souls concert, shooting family photos, working, Tim Kasher concert, Suns game, Tom's birthday, Thanksgiving, more working, house work, and sleeping I forgot about blogging. Oh well, at least I'm still out living my life, just forgetting to capture it.

This is a little late, but for Thanksgiving I am thankful for all the wonderful friends and family (especially Tom) who keep me so busy.

This Labor Day weekend was all about pictures. Friday night Tom and I met Iliza Shlesinger outside the Improv (we're big fans of Last Comic Standing)! So I was a bit of a paparazzi.

Then on Sunday Sarah, Matt, Tom, and I headed over to Adult Swim at the Hotel San Carlos and there the paparazzi was in full force! The ratio of newspaper photographers to hipsters was downright funny. Tom and I went camping this weekend. On the recommendation from Tom's friend Brad and my friend Janet we headed north of Payson to the Mogollon Rim. We tried to get a spot near Woods Canyon Lake but they were full so we headed further into the woods for some dispersed camping. That night we sat by the fire and managed to see 3 shooting stars thanks to the Perseids meteor shower.

The next morning we headed over to hike the Horton Springs hiking trail. My grandpa was named Horton McBride, so I think he would have liked the hike, I wonder if he ever went on it? Anyways, the hike was a bit hot, but the waterfalls in the creek were pretty. After the hike we headed to town and looked around the antique shops (we're on a hunt for creepy antique portraits but didn't find any). Tom did buy a set of old looking keys, very Pirates of the Caribbean. Overall, it was a nice little weekend.

you can't judge a person by their book cover if they're holding a kindle

So while browsing around on slate.com as I usually do when I have a break at work I came across this article bemoaning the loss of judging someone by their book cover with the new invention of the kindle:

“So what will you do, Kindle generation, when you cannot tell which of the quiet boys holding the e-reader on the subway is engrossed by the latest, predictable legal thriller, and which one by a cheery, long-forgotten Laurie Colwin novel? If by some chance you do end up with the right one, what do you buy him a month later, when it is time for that first, tentative, not-too-expensive present—a gift certificate for a free download?”

I thought it was interesting, because Tom and I met because of books AND technology. I had friended him on livejournal.com and he made a post asking for reading suggestions (he was just graduated from college, jobless, and needed something new to read). I think I suggested The Catcher in the Rye and the rest is history.

So I think the Kindle/IPad generation will just have to start updating their Facebook status and tweeting about what book they are reading, since no one can glance at them and tell. For me, I am still reading paperbacks because I am cheap and I do want full bookshelves for my new house!

(Right now I'm finish A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers-a fun thing I've been doing is imagining John Krasinki as Dave Eggers since he was in the movie Away We Go-also written by Eggers.

Break the Mold

Hello and welcome to our first Break the Mold newsletter of sorts. First things first here is a quick reminder of what this project is about:

We are looking to start a non-profit organization that will provide a scholarship to a female student involved with the arts and her community to pursue her education after high school. Included with this scholarship would be a makeover night that would feature make-up, hair, photos (and much more).

We want to thank everyone who has offered to help and hope you will all tell your friends about this great project. Please email back with any email addresses you would like to add to the distribution list!! (I will keep the emails short and sweet when I can :)

On Saturday 06/26/2010 Jessica hosted a meeting at her apartment to discuss the project; Melissa, Kat, Carol, Rhonda, and Sam attended. Below is a rundown on what we discussed:

Website-We want to start the website ASAP. Jessica has a friend who will start developing a website for us, Melissa will contact her friend at godaddy.com to secure a domain name, Kat & Rhonda will play around with logo design and color schemes. We would like to also link a blog and facebook to the site. Ideas were discussed about making sure the site is girly but no cliche as well as user friendly. Melissa will start a Google Doc to start ideas for the information on the site, Carol will help edit.

Tax Status-Jessica has the details on becoming an official charity, 501(3)(c). She will file the paperwork to secure the name first, the remaining paperwork requires a $400 payment. We have a donor who has offered to pay that in August. Carol will check with Free Arts of Arizona to see if we can become a charity under their umbrella.

Donations-Sam will check with local banks to see where we should begin our account. Once we have the name and bank account we will be able to start asking for donations more aggressively. We are going to look for business to sponsor the scholarship, in return they will receive free advertising on our website and at all events.

Scholarship Criteria-We discussed opening the scholarship up to all females but the group is still considering that option. For now we have tentatively decided to open the scholarship to female high school seniors in the Phoenix Metro Area.

Scholarship-The group has decided to not make prom a focus of the scholarship. The ideas so far are that we will have a cash scholarship of $500-$2000 for the winner (we will see in December/January what our funds are like), a makeover for your new college look or graduation night (Amber Pope may be able to donate hairstyling), a personal photo shoot & artwork portfolio shoot (Rhonda Lewis will donate photo services). We discussed the idea of having a big event for the 10 finalists (an art show event where we charge a nominal fee for friends & family) where the winner is announced at the end.

Fundraiser-The idea of a craft show, food tasting event, raffle/silent auction, or rummage sale were brought up as a way to advertise and raise funds. All members of the group will be looking for areas to host a possible event and we can contact once we have set up our charity status.

That's all I can remember for now folks . . . look for another email in the next little while once I have set up the Google Doc and to discuss our next online or in person meeting.

Punk Rock Pillows

A Craft Tutorial brought to you by Melississippi of the Phoenix United Crafters Society

Crafter Difficulty Level: Sewing = Easy, Crafting = Hard

Materials: Sewing machine, needle & thread, pins, 10 or so T-shirts, pillow or stuffing, ruler, fabric pencil

Introduction: I think this craft will appeal to anyone who was into going to concerts (shows as we called them back in the day) and buying band T-shirts. The shirts themselves were only like $10-$20, but the nostalgia associated with them makes them priceless. Eventually though, you outgrow the shirt, or it gets old, ripped, etc-but you still can't throw it out! I realized my husband and I had a box of say 20 or more T-shirts that we were never going to wear again, but couldn't bear to part with. Inspired by the work of Boo Davis and her Quiltsryche Quilts I attempted a smaller project, a pillow. The making of this pillow included shirts from Melississippi's collection: Limp, Before Braille, At.The.Drive.In, The Get up Kids, Reel Big Fish, and Jimmy Eat World. And Tom's collection: The Bouncing Souls, Number Two, Filter, and Sonic Youth.

Step 1: Cut down your T-shirts.

(This step may be the hardest, not in the difficulty level, but because these shirts always made you feel like a bad mamma jamma walking around high school. I mean, wearing this T-shirt to school the next day means you went to the show last night, that was something!) Anyways, back to the cutting. First, I rough cut the shirts to get rid of the collar and sleeves etc, just into a big square or rectangle.

Step 2: Iron the squares & rectangles

Always iron on the backside of the fabric (not the logo!). First iron them flat, then using your ruler iron them into nice neat squares and rectangles. Try and leave 1 to 2 inches around the logo.

Step 3: Pin together pieces and sew, and then repeat, repeat, repeat.

I planned for my pillow to have all the pieces sort of tetris-ed together, I didn't want all the patches the same size. So I would attach 2 together, sew, then attach another, sew, and kept going until my fabric was long enough (hold it up to the pillow you are trying to cover to measure.) I did two shirts across, then kept adding to the bottom until I had a long piece of fabric.

Step 4: Clean up the back

You will probably have a lot of extra fabric and thread on the back, cut as close to your seam as possible so your pillow won't be lumpy!

Step 5: Sew up two sides

Turn your fabric inside out and fold it in half. Make sure it is even and lined up and then pin one side together. I first measured and marked it with my ruler and fabric pencil. Sew together that side then repeat for the other side. Turn the pillow right side out to check that it is the right size, then turn it back inside out to cut off the excess fabric (except for the top, leave an inch or two of the excess there.)

Step 6: Insert pillow and hand sew the top up.

Once your pillow is inside, try and fold over the edges and hold or pin together and sew together a clean edge.

Step 7: Lay on the pillow and rock out with your headphones like you're 16 again!

Graduation and the recipe for the perfect clambake

So first of all, I graduated! So here's some traditional cap & gown photos (Tom, his mom and my sisters were there too, but I looked funny in those pictures. So last week was sort of non-stop partying, with graduation Thursday night, my friends over Saturday and my family (most of the cousins and all) over on Monday.

With all that I think I was able to come up with the recipe for the perfect clambake.

Peeps Wreath (a little late for Easter)

So I am a little late on this posting, but better late than never!
So on Easter I found this adorable craft on this blog Tried & True and had to make one for myself! So I proceeded to practically buy out the CVS for their leftover Peeps and got to hot glueing. In the original craft she used toothpicks and a straw wreath. I already had a wicker (?) wreath so I just glued them on since toothpicks wouldn't work so well. We'll see how it holds up in the Easter decorations box and hang it next year!

Also, did you know they made Peeps for other holidays like Halloween? Crazy right (I'm thinking another wreath is coming!)

So what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas so I can't really tell you what we did . . . but I can show a few pictures and mention a few great places we visited. We stayed at the Imperial Palace which is right in the middle of the strip and all I can say is -Dealertainers!

One of the best parts of the trip was the food, first off was dinner at Ichiza it's off the strip and had an amazing dessert: honey toast.

Speaking of desserts . . . we finally tried a deep fried oreo (they show them on the food network all the time) it was kind of like a fry bread with chocolate mush inside.

Then there was breakfast at Hash House a go go, my new favorite favorite breakfast spot (sorry Matt's Big Breakfast). The food was huge and delicious, they even had a bowl of cereal on the menu for Tom who's not really into breakfast.

So I have been incredibly over-tired and over-worked lately and what shows up in my email but an article on how we all need more sleep from GOOP
The most interesting thing I saw in it were these Dawn Simulator Alarm Clocks where it gradually gets brighter and brighter in your room. I think I may need one when I have an extra $70 lying around . . . I have no problem getting to sleep, but I hate waking up in the dark all winter (I usually get up at 6am).

So the day isn't even over yet and already it's been eventful . . .

First of all, in the wee hours of the morning Chile had a massive earthquake and my little brother is there! The mission said all the missionaries were ok, but still!! It's crazy not to be able to talk to him, to see if his house is okay, etc. Here is a youtube video of what's going on

Then, today was day 1 of the 9th Annual Ceramic Studio Tour so Tom and I were at that all day. He tried to set a record of speed throwing, making 25 bowls in under 10 minutes! I like to celebrate my birthday for not just one day . . . but a whole week. I highly recommend this type of celebration. The party started about 3 days prior on Sunday when I went to my family's house for dinner, trifle and lots and lots of presents :) The on Tuesday the day before we had our Lost season premiere/birthday party. Me and Tom were pretty excited about the Dharma additions to our food supply. We found out that our friends are very nice people, but most of them not Lost fans, what the heck? Oh well, a few people stayed until the end, but those that left early were still appreciated. And again I got spoiled with waaaayyyy too many presents.

Then on my actual birthday I took the morning off of work (it was allowed :) and showed up with cupcakes for everyone. Then I ditched my night class and went to Zumba class with Kat, who doesn't like to work out on their birthday?

Friday was my last day of celebration, my wonderful crafty friends went out on the town with me. After meeting up at Darenna's swanky new pad we went to Fuse Fridays at Bar Smith. We were more than a little dissappointed though, I had picked it for 3 reasons; proximity to the light rail (which it lived up to), Disco hour at 9:30, and free cupcakes because it was one of the DJs birthdays as well. We got there around 9pm and asked the DJs where the disco was and they were very reluctant to play any. Then there was no cupcakes in sight, I don't understand why they put that on the flyer and then didn't live up to it. But we can have fun anywhere and still had a great time, I stayed out pretty darn late. Also, met Young MC, totally random right? He was nice and took pictures with us, so bust a move.

So we built Tom's website years ago on yahoo sitebuilder, it was pretty easy and worked well for years until I bought this new computer. Turns out they don't work with Windows 7 which we now have. Thankfully, a friend had just recommended Other People's Pixels which was around the same price if we bought a year up front. So voila-new website!

Fresh Cranberry Cookies

So after Thanksgiving and Christmas I usually end up with an extra bag of cranberries somehow. They usually get frozen until the next year, but I found this recipe the other day that will easily help me use them all up. These cookies are not very crunchy, they taste a little like eating a cranberry muffin, maybe a new breakfast cookie? :)

Cranberry Cookies (from cooks.com and changed only slightly)

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/3 cup skim milk
1 egg
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. soda
2 1/2 cups fresh cranberries, mine were frozen, then thawed and coarsely chopped
1 tbsp. grated orange rind (I used a tangelo instead)

Combine butter, sugar and vanilla; cream until light and fluffy. Add milk and egg, beating well.

Combine dry ingredients; gradually add to creamed mixture, mixing well. Dough will be dry. Stir in the remaining ingredients.

Drop dough by tablespoons onto greased cookie sheets; bake at 375 degrees until lightly browned and set about 12 minutes. Makes about 4 dozen.

back from Seattle!

So Seattle was great, it's one of those cities you feel like you know already since you've seen it on TV so many times. The trip had a bit of a slow start, we were flying stand-by and got bumped from a few flights and had to hang out in the airport . . but we knew that was going to happen so it's ok, i'd rather save the money and wait!

When we got in it was raining (how very cliche Seattle, haha) and we spent the night hanging out at our hotel, the Hotel Max was as great as it purported to be online. The rooms had modern art in them, the doors were all giant black and white photos. This was our door (notice the do not disturb tag). We did go next door to the adjoining sushi bar, Red Fin. We had some great food and I was blown away by how every song that played was like my favorite (arcade fire, yeah yeah yeahs, mgmt, etc). (me in the hotel hallway)
The next day we got Top Pot doughnuts we'd seen it on Food Network and it was just as delicious as promised. Then we met up with some friends from when Tom was in grad school, Margot and Lyle. We did the underground tour, it was very cool walking around under the city and I feel like I learned something too, lots of history! Then we ate at Ipanema, they surprisingly had lots of vegetarian options for being a Brazilian meat restaurant! We then headed over the Seattle Art Museum to check out the exhibits, the Alexander Calder exhibit was pretty cool. (in the lobby of the museum)

After spending a few hours there we decided to walk over to Shortys, a bar that everyone kept recommending. It was great, they had a veggie hot dog, very delicious, tons of pinball machines and circus-y hipsters. Another one of Tom's old friends, Jeff met us up there.(Margot & Lyle enjoying Shorty's dogs)

After the late night on Thursday we slept in on Friday awhile. When we finally got up we went to see the Troll under the bridge and then drove to Tacoma to stay with one of my high school friends Danielle and her husband Corey. They are so cute, with their little dog Gustav.We went and walked around the glass exhibits outside the Museum of glass. Then we had a little driving tour of Tacoma, I didn't know they had a rainforest there, it was awesome. That night we ate at Primo Grill and stayed in.

The next day we drove back to Seattle to do some sightseeing. We met up with another high school friend of Tom's, Angel and her husband Ian, at ate at Dick's burgers. I only had the fries but they were good! Then we walked down to the piers, browsed the Ye Old Curiosity Shoppe, Pike's Place Market, saw fish being thrown around, watched cheese being made, checked out a Polish Pottery shop that was cool but pricey, and many many more things I'm probably forgetting. When we finally settled down we had lunch at the Crab Pot, I needed me some clam chowder! After that we drove up the hill to get a good view of the city, by then it was pretty rainy and I was sooo glad I had brought my toe-warmers along for the day.
Then we checked out the GIGANTIC REI store, they have a giant climbing wall where you can test out the equipment, it was pretty cool but I didn't brave it in my dress! We then swung by to say hi to another of Tom's high school friends, Leah, before heading back to Tacoma for a chill night. That night we had some Thai food, watched Public Enemies and Saturday Night Live, very much a good evening.

The next day we amazingly got on a plane home (it was way busier than we had thought because of the holidays) after being in the airport forever!

Being born in 1983 I was the perfect age for the years of the best holiday TV specials. My mom and dad would set the VCR to record and we treasured those tapes, watching the same holiday specials in the fall and winter every year.

For Halloween there was:

A Disney Halloween, Charlie Brown, and Garfield

For Thanksgiving:
Garfield's Thanksgiving, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving,

And last of all for Christmas there is: Charlie Brown, Garfield, The Chipmunks,

and Pee Wee!!!

I now have some of these on DVD and get to watch them, but I do sort of miss the funny commercials that were on those old tapes. And I'm not going to say this is a nerdy thing to love, because EVERYONE likes the Charlie Brown specials I think. We went to the Rob Zombie concert last month and he was playing Charlie Brown Halloween on the giant screen over the stage, it was great.

So Happy Thanksgiving! This year I am not only thankful for old TV, but all the wonderful friends and family in my life.

So for my BLE 220 class the teacher always sends around an attendance sheet that you write your name, and then also answer the question next to it. Sometimes the question is what is your favorite sport, hobby, movie, band, etc.

The question last night was "What is your favorite artwork?" Which you would think for an art major would be easy, but surprisingly it wasn't. The first thing that popped into my head was this sculpture: Nike of Samothrace ca. 240-190B.C.

I don't know why, I saw it once in an art history textbook and was enthralled. It's in the Louvre in Paris, so someday I'll have to go see it. Then I thought, No, I should have a photo and I thought of this: Nightsky by Lori Novak 1990.

After I had made some photos using a slide projector one of my teachers had shown me her work, I think I liked that I came to same idea as her, before ever seeing these photos the most. But then I couldn't decide. By then I was like "hurry up melissa, people will think you're weird worrying so much about this little question on the attendance sheet." So I ended up putting down this:Mayme Kratz, Knot 222 Resin and Weeds on Panel 12x12.

Not because it's my favorite work of all time, but my favorite thing I've seen recently. Kratz has a show at the Lisa Sette Gallery in Scottsdale running through January 2, 2010 and I went the other week and wanted to bust out my credit card to buy one, but I didn't. I like that they look like paintings from far away, but up close it's natural materials and resin, so more like sculpture. I'm loving the multi media and mixed media art that doesn't really seem to have a title of "painting" "sculpture" "photograph" anymore.

Anyways, to anyone reading this, what is your favorite artwork?

Indie Chic on 10th Street

So ASU is having a new event, Indie Chic on 10th Street, their website says it best:

Indie Chic @ 10th Street is an alternative craft fair with a collection of art and crafts. The show features local vendors and handmade items ranging from clothing to jewelry to ceramics and wall art.

Shop handmade and local. Why? It helps the environment by reducing your carbon footprint, it keeps your hard-earned money in the community and it supports Phoenix’s handmade revolution!

Free parking is available just outside of the Ceramics Research Center on the NE corner of Mill Ave. and 10th Street, in museum-marked spaces. Metered parking is also available on the street.

It should be an awesome shopping for the holidays event! Tom is going to have a booth and I'll be working at it so it would be great if everyone would stop by.

Hollywood Alley

Living in Arizona as long as I have I've been to concerts at a lot of venues . . . .

the nile, nita's hideaway, new nita's, the marquee, the clubhouse, the rythym room, the modified, the dodge theater, cricket/blockbuster/whatever it is pavillion, the web theater, the phix, the trunk space, four white walls, the big fish pub, bostons, the buddha lounge, etc (and i'm probably forgetting quite a few).

But one place I'd never been was Hollywood Alley, and I don't know why! Last Tuesday me, Kat and Dareena all went to celebrate our friend Alice's early birthday and went to see Girl in a Coma. As soon as I walked in I loved the place, the big booths and records everywhere. So I'd like to say more good shows should be there! Or it should just be my new hang out. On Friday 11/20 they have a movie/concert/fashion show/spy thing happening, me & Tom might have to check it out . . .

i love halloween. did everyone know that already or what? i love dressing up, i love an excuse to stay out late, i *used* to love candy (this year i did not have one piece and was pretty darn proud of myself). Because Tom and I love dressing up so much we had two different costumes each. One was PG rated so we could wear them to our Saturday morning classes where we teach little kids ceramics. Tom printed a free Chewbacca mask that I thought was pretty cool. I was going to be martian girl from planet v (aquabats fans will get it) but then i got lazy and didn't paint my skin green. But I did write in martian language: Later that night, we transformed into the living dead and headed out into the darkness. We found other zombies (Daryl and Shawna) and feasted together. Then we moved on to the zombie prom at the rogue bar. My favorite costume i saw that night was this dancing bear. something about a dancing bear made me quite happy.

Those are me & Tom's new bedside lamps (on top of our new Ikea Malm bedside tables :). We made them and I've been meaning to post (and brag a little) about our crafty-ness. My favorite magazine, Bust, has a DIY (do-it-yourself) section every month that I usually tear out and put in a folder of crafts to try. A few weeks ago we were having a "recession weekend" (staying in and trying not to spend too much money) and started these. The first set of books were took from the library in our house, but we couldn't find 4 more we were willing to destroy so we went to Goodwill for the other set. The hardest part about it was actually finding the lampshades, most lampshades these days don't use the harp and we had bought a kit from Home Depot that needed a harp! I finally found these at Big Lots.

I like the Spraygraphic shows (I was in the mini mini show before) because they showcase a lot of good work, they try to include everyone that submits and really create an excitement for the arts in the community. First of all I have to give props to my husband Tom. Last week his piece, Melting Pot, won first place in the "History in the Making IV" show at the Genesee Center for the Arts and Education in Rochester, NY.

Last week we also saw artist Kathy Butterly speak at ASU. A lot of the work she makes is using the same mold for a cup or mug and then she will alter it and fire up to 20 or 30 times to get all of the different effects in the glazing. It was pretty amazing to think about how many hours must be put into each one of those small objects. Tom and I talked about spending that much time on an artwork on our way home, I rarely spend that much time on something, but it's obviously worth the effort.

So I found this kitschy little treasure at Big Lots the other day for 4 bucks and had to buy it, a Ghost Hunting Camera! Since the camera promised a ghost in every frame I tried to guess the placement and only a few worked, haha. The film quality is crappy, i'm wondering if these cameras were from last halloween . . .

I haven't actually made anything shown on there yet, but I was thinking about how that statement is true. I do love to create things, I'm a little bored this semester without any studio classes. No one is asking me to make anything and frankly, I'm usually too busy to have time to make things for fun.

Last Saturday I did get to make something though, and even use my sewing machine! Just making something out of materials around the house makes me feel productive. I spend too much time on the computer making electronic things that I can't touch. Hopefully I'll get more time to make stuff, the holidays are coming . . . maybe everyone should get handmade gifts this year.

Why does everything have to happen on the same weekend?

So tonight is the Season Opener for the ASU Art Museum. There main exhibit is Defining Sustainability. Jarbas Lopez-Ciclovia Aerea

But I have to work till 7:30pm and then drive to Peoria to pick up my mother-in-law from a Quincinera (and maybe do some dancing . . . we'll see how the party is going by the time I get there!)

Then Saturday is the Tour de Fat and there will be a bike parade in Tempe! But I can't go to that either . . . I teach kids ceramics for one of my classes on Saturday mornings so I will be there. But look how cute it is to teach them how to throw: After my class I'm meeting up with my craft group to work on our book (yes, we're making a craft book, it will be awesome, but it will take a long time, so we'll talk about it in 6 months or so)

Then Saturday there's also a pretty awesome looking free show starting at 2pm and probably going late at the Yucca Tap Room with Fishbone playing. But we also got invited to go see Couples Retreat which I think looks funny so I want to do that too.

Sunday is the Race for the Cure so I'll be running/jogging/walking my way for a good cause. (last chance to donate anyone with money!!!)

Anyways, the point of the post is that I would like all of these things to be spread out over a week so I can do them all :(
